ON Tuesday August 4, the club welcomed Graham Dean from Darwen to judge our monthly competition. There were two categories: Pictorial and Photo-journalism.
We certainly got our money’s worth out of the judge as he went through each of the 43 pictorial prints and gave constructive commentary.
In third place was Derek Warren with his photograph of Donkerpoort in Ypres which included a figure in a muted red coat against an almost monochrome background, which the judge found very effective. Second place went to Judith Shackman with the aptly-titled ‘A Balanced View’ showing balanced rocks in a countryside setting with good detail and nice colours. The winner was ‘Hartshead Pike’ by Alan Flavell, with a very dramatic sky and a good viewpoint.
There were 15 Photo-journalism prints depicting events from water sports to crowd scenes. Third place went to new member, Anthony Shackman, for his high-action shot of Manchester 10k winner Vivian Cheruiyot. In second place was Albert Moore’s photograph of Sri Lankan protestors which told the story very well. The winner was Eileen Craig’s shot, ‘Powerrisers’ bouncing high on their hi-tech stilts in front of amazed onlookers. It was a difficult shot to get and was well composed and captured.
The club are holding an Open Day from 10am to 4pm on Saturday August 15 at Bridge Methodist Hall, behind Radcliffe Library, where we meet every Tuesday at 7.45pm. The next meeting on August 18 will be a lecture on Western Canada, so do come along and join us. VAP
