I SEE that, yet again, Bury is to put up more so-called traffic calming bumps and speed cameras.

Wouldn’t it be better to put up the type of sign that lights up to tell motorists to slow down, rather than sending them a nice letter saying they must pay a £60 fine and get three points on their licence?

After all, cameras may slow the traffic and stop people getting injured, but all the slowing down and speeding up produces extra CO2, which is not very green.

All the latest ploys are back-firing, turning motorists away from shopping in the town centre — the cost of car parking in the area, the cost of petrol, not to mention traffic wardens who want to stick tickets on anything that doesn’t move for one minute or more.

On the theme of road safety, the condition of the roads in the Bury area are quite bad with pot holes.

Why doesn’t the council use all the material for speed bumps to fill them in — it will have more than enough.
