A STUDENT has flown out to Africa after winning a national compeition organised by supermarket chain, Sainsbury’s.

Luke Doyle beat hundreds of students from across the country to take first prize and win the holiday of a lifetime — a trip to Kenya.

The final year BA (Hons) film and media studies student at Manchester Metropolitan University spotted the competition on the Sainsbury’s website while searching for graduate jobs.

A few weeks ago he discovered the 250 words he had written on why Fairtrade was important to him had secured him a place in the competition final.

During the day-long event, 21-year-old Luke, of Brandlesholme Road, Bury, joined five other finalists to take part in discussions on Fairtrade during the morning.

And, in the afternoon, Luke gave a 10-minute presentation to six Sainsbury’s judges on what he believes Fairtrade can do to beat the recession.

Luke, who flew out to Kenya last Friday, said: “I’ve always been interested in ethical consumption and buy Fairtrade products, so immediately wanted to get involved in the competition.

“I couldn’t believe it when I found out I’d made the final and was pretty nervous about giving a presentation.

“But the judges really liked my ideas about targeting a younger audience with Fairtrade products and taking advantage of the current ethical fashion trend.

“In Kenya I’ll be visiting Fairtrade flower and food farms. While I’m there Sainsbury’s is providing me with a video camera to film how the communities and schools are benefiting from working with Fairtrade. I’d like to go into ethical marketing or advertising after I leave university, so it’ll be a great experience as well as a holiday.”
