A TRAINEE priest is appealing to Bury Times readers for pictures or memories of a giant Madonna and child mural which was painted on the wall of his family home.
The biblical scene caused consternation and admiration in equal measure when it was painted on the outside wall of the property in Bury by local artist Walter Kershaw.
Now, more than 30 years later, Joshua Thetford is anxious to have a photographic record of the mural.
He said: “I was a young child when my parents James and Irene had the Madonna and child painted on a wall outside our house in Kay Street. It was done by Walter Kershaw in about 1972 or 1973. It caused quite a bit of controversy at the time, particularly because we hadn’t sought permission for it.
We left the house in about 1976-77. I’d like to ask any readers for their pictures or recollections.”
Mr Thetford (39), now lives in Liverpool and is training to be a priest. He added: “The house was demolished some years ago but it was a part of our family history.” Those who can help can email him at joshuathetford@yahoo.co.uk
