Emergency services attended a fire in Unsworth last night (Sunday, November 17), just hours after responding to a stabbing one street away.

The fire broke out at a house on Malton Avenue at around 10.55pm.

Fire crews from Whitefield, Bury and Broughton attended the property and called Greater Manchester Police (GMP), with officers arriving shortly afterward.

No injuries have been reported.

One neighbour said: “"I was watching television and heard the sirens. I looked out the window and saw two fire engines outside."

A police cordon was still in place on the residential street this morning as officers and CSI worked inside.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service at 22:55pm last night to Malton Avenue. The scene is still in place and an investigation is underway. No injuries have been reported."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 10.55pm on Sunday 17 November, three fire engines from Whitefield, Bury and Broughton fire stations attended a house fire on Malton Avenue, Whitefield.

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus arrived quickly and used one hose reel, equipment to break into the property, a positive pressure ventilation fan and a gas monitor to extinguish the fire.

"Firefighters liaised with Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe and departed after roughly one and a half hours.”

In another incident, Police also attended a stabbing on Malton Close, just off Sawley Avenue at around 4pm.

A man was taken to hospital with “serious injuries” and no arrests have been made at present.
