Retirement homes planned for Prestwich will start being built next February and are set to be finished in 2026.

The McCarthy Stone retirement homes will be built where the Fairways Lodge used to be, in the Sedgley area of Prestwich on George Street.

The plans show that 52 retirement apartments will be built on the site, with building commencing next February until a currently unknown date in 2026.

Many nearby residents were upset at the plans, with the former hotel and leisure centre being described as “the heart of the community”.

Fairways Lodge used to have hotel rooms, function rooms, a bar, in house restaurants and a gym with squash courts and supported 45 jobs.

Many residents said that the lodge would be a massive loss to the community as it has not been replaced.

On the Bury Council Planning Portal, there were 127 objections made to the plans for the plans.

Chris Butt, for McCarthy and Stone, said: “The scheme will deliver 52 much needed retirement living units.

“It will deliver a mix of one and two-bed apartments together with communal facilities.

“The typical occupier will be around 79 years and will be downsizing from a family home in the local area so it will also free up under occupied family homes.

“We believe the scheme will be a successful addition to the area’s character.”
