A man sustained “serious injuries” in a stabbing in Unsworth last night (Sunday, November 17).

The incident took place on Malton Close, a residential street just off Sawley Avenue at around 4pm and the man in his 40s was taken to hospital.

One resident who lives a few doors away said they heard “moaning and groaning” in the street before an ambulance arrived shortly afterwards.

They said: “It used to be quiet around here but it’s been horrendous lately. It feels like there’s always something going on.”

No arrests have been made and the man is said to be in a “stable condition”.

One neighbour has lived on nearby Ripon Close “all his life”.

He said: “It [police incidents] seems to happen a lot now around here."

Although how the injuries happened is not known, the incident has prompted knife crime concerns.

The resident added@ "You never know who is carrying a knife these days.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: “Just after 4.15pm today (17 November 2024), police were called to a report of a stabbing on Malton Close.

“Officers attended and a man in his 40s was located nearby. He has suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and has taken to hospital where he remains in stable condition.”

A resident on Malton Close told the Bury Times that they have stopped walking around the area now, preferring to drive instead and that they no longer use the nearby ginnel, which they say is home to “a lot of drug use and other criminal activity.”

They also shared that has concerns about keeping their teenage son safe while living on the street.

Detective Sergeant Rebecca Dickinson of GMP’s Bury district, said: “I want to reassure the community that we are continuing to work closely with our partner agencies to ensure we keep Bury, and the wider Greater Manchester community, safe.

“We have a team of detectives working hard to establish the full circumstances of this incident.
