Members of a borough running group certainly went the extra mile as they joined a 24-hour challenge to tackle homelessness.

After completing their weekly run with Prestwich Plodders, more than 30 women travelled to the city centre on the tram to run or walk another 5k.

They were taking part in the Manchester 24-Hour Run Against Homelessness, a mass participation group relay run which started at noon on Wednesday and finished 24 hours later.

The event has raised more than £50,000 since it started in 2019 for Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham’s A Bed Every Night scheme, which aims to address homelessness by providing a bed and support for people sleeping on the streets.

So far Prestwich Plodders, which is a social running group for women, have collected more than £1,500, with donations still being made.

People can donate to the appeal by visiting the JustGiving crowdfunding page.

Run leader Sandra Powers took part in last year’s event and invited fellow members of the group to join her this time.

She said: “The Manchester 24-Hour Run Against Homelessness is a great event and has grown every year since it started, raising more money each time to help people who are struggling and need a comfy bed, a warm welcome and support.

“It was brilliant to see so many members of Prestwich Plodders taking part in the run and helping to make a difference. We’ve been overwhelmed by how much money has been raised.”
