A Post Office branch in Prestwich is on a list of potential closures - and a borough MP will be launching a campaign to save it from shutting.

The Post Office is set to close or transfer more than 100 branches across the UK in a bid to save money.

And the branch on Kingswood Road in Prestwich has been named on the list.

Chairman of the Post Office, Nigel Railton, made the announcement this morning (Wednesday, November 13) at the company’s headquarters.

He said: “The Post Office has a 360-year history of public service and today we want to secure that service for the future by learning from past mistakes and moving forward for the benefit of all postmasters.

“We can, and will, restore pride in working for a business with a legacy of service, rather than one of scandal.”

The Post Office revealed it is looking to offload 115 branches within its 11,500 network, which have been deemed “the most unprofitable”.

These are the only remaining branches directly owned by the Post Office, down from close to 400 in 2010.

The move could see the branches transferred to retail partners or postmasters, or potentially closed, along with around 1,000 jobs being put at risk.

Bury South MP Christian Wakeford will be campaigning to save the Prestwich branch from closing.

He said: "Anyone who has been to Prestwich Post Office will know how busy it is and how vital the service it offers are, to residents in Prestwich and the surrounding areas.

"This move shows the continued lack of awareness by the Post Office management of its customers, employees, and communities fresh off the back of the Horizon scandal.

"Many Post Offices have been updated or adapted to allow for banking hubs which complement the activity of the Post Office.

"With Prestwich’s last bank due close (Halifax), there is no reason why the Post Office couldn’t help provide this service which would help drive footfall to the town.

"As your MP I will be working with local councillors to stand up for our local Post Office branch and the brilliant, well used services it provides.

"As such we’ll be launching a campaign and petition to keep Prestwich Post Office open.

"We will continue to provide updates on this campaign – I’ll be sharing the details on my social media, if you would like to be kept up to date please leave your contact details and sign our petition to help us save this vital community asset."

The Post Office also confirmed that hundreds of further roles are under threat at its headquarters as it looks to streamline office operations.

Branches in Manchester, Leigh, Hyde, Morecambe, Didsbury, Stockport and Salford City have also been named as at risk.

Mr Railton said the shake-up will also offer a “new deal for postmasters” by increasing their share of revenue and giving them a greater say in the running of the business as it looks to move on from the Horizon IT scandal that saw hundreds of subpostmasters wrongfully convicted.

It follows a strategic review launched by Mr Railton in May, but is reliant on funding talks with the government, which the Post Office said were “positive and ongoing”.

The government is also said to have been consulted on the possibility of handing ownership of the network to thousands of subpostmasters across the country.
