Long delays formed along the M66 Nortbound after a van fire.
One lane was closed on Wednesday with delays of 33 minutes between J3 at Pilsworth and the A6 Ramsbottom Junction, with average speeds recorded at 10mph.
National Highways was expecting the incident to be clear between 4.45pm and 5pm.
The incident was first reported at around 3.30pm and drivers looking for alternative routes were advised to leave the motorway at Heap Bridge.
Traffic system Inrix said: “Long delays and one lane closed due to van fire. Congestion to J3 (Hollins).”
