An alert has been sent out to parents in the borough after a "concerning incident" took place in Prestwich on Monday.

The message, which has been seen by the Bury Times, is titled "Safeguarding Concern in Bury" and states how a Year 10 pupil was followed and harassed by a man in his 40s near St Monica’s High School on Bury Old Road.

It said: “A Y10 pupil was approached by a man on their way home last night.

"The parent of the pupil has shared with the school that her daughter was approached by a man, approx 40 years of age, wearing a coral pink hoodie.”

He then continued to ask her to shake his hand and followed her around 300 metres while saying “how beautiful she was".

The man then asked the girl's age. When she replied, he commented “old enough” and went on to sit on a bench with two other men.

The incident occurred on Bury New Road between Lidl and Our Lady of Dolours Church, according to the message.

The Bury Times understands that the alert has been sent out to parents of children at all schools in the borough including Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom, Hoyles Nursery School in Bury and St Monica's High School.

Parents are being asked to report any similar encounters to schools and the police, who are currently investigating the Prestwich allegations. 

A spokesperson for St Monica's High School said: "A parent has shared with us that her daughter was approached by a man wearing a coral pink hoodie.

"He gave her flowers and wanted a hug to which she refused. The incident occurred on Bury New Road between Lidl and Our Lady of Dolours Church.

"Police have been contacted by the school and are following this up.

"Parents have been made aware of this and school leaders have stressed to students the need for vigilance on their way to and from school and what to do if they are involved in a situation like this.

"Trust Leaders remain grateful to school staff for their focus on safeguarding the young people in their care."

Greater Manchester Police and the council have been contacted for comment.
