Police in Bury were out in force last night, Tuesday, making sure people were celebrating Bonfire Night in a responsible way.

However, the force said a small number of people chose to behave irresponsibly, and action was taken to prevent anti-social behaviour.

Ten people were stopped and searched for firework possession, with some of these yielding a "positive result".

However, many families and groups enjoyed the firework displays and bonfires that were done in the correct manner.

On Tuesday, a Bury police spokesperson said: “This evening has been an eventful one to say the least.

“We hope everyone enjoyed the fireworks displays and bonfires that were done in the correct manner under supervision of adults, for the small minority who chose to behave irresponsibly swift action was taken to prevent further anti-social behaviour.

“Ten persons have been stop searched under Section 1 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 to find fireworks in their possession, some of these proved to be a positive result.

“Section 50 of the Police Reform Act 2002 was utilised to its full potential in order to obtain the details of those detained to prevent further anti-social behaviour.

“Multiple families, events and groups were engaged with positively to ensure everyone had a safe evening.

“If you spot anyone using fireworks in an antisocial manner you can call us on 101 or if it’s an emergency on 999.

“We proactively respond to concerns and target those who are misusing fireworks.”
