Bury's gritters are gearing up for action as winter arrives.

The council's winter service team is ready to ensure key roads across the borough remain operational.

Last year, they undertook 45 grit runs, covering around 6,530 miles and spreading approximately 1,100 tonnes of salt.

The service is on standby from late October until early April, ready to respond whenever temperatures drop.

Throughout the season, 16 drivers and four decision makers are on a rota, with four drivers and one decision maker on standby during each shift.

Four vehicles are used to complete the gritting routes, each taking up to five hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.

A spare vehicle is kept in reserve for any breakdowns.

The council has a stock of 2,500 tonnes of Safecote-treated salt in preparation for severe weather.

This is stored at Bolton Council’s depot to allow resource sharing if necessary.

Safecote salt is preferred as it is coated with molasses, making it less corrosive and stick to road surfaces.

The borough is equipped with 324 salt bins at known problem areas, such as sharp bends or steep inclines where snow and ice have previously caused issues.

These salt bins are being re-stocked by streetscene teams upon request.

Cllr Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change, and operations, said: "Almost 142 miles of roads are salted during one round of complete gritting – 35 per cent of the total road network in the borough.

"And, when necessary, gritting teams also carry out snow clearance, with ploughs fitted to vehicles.

"We plan well ahead to be ready for the arrival of winter and to make sure our experienced team are ready for action.

"Forecasts are constantly monitored so that we can pick the best times to send the gritters out and our team will be on standby 24 hours a day, seven days a week, working through the night until next April, when needed.

"Keeping Bury moving and keeping people safe is a priority."
