Pupils at a borough school enjoyed a visit from the mayor of Bury as they were officially appointed leadership positions.

The newly elected head boys and girls at St Michael's RC Primary School in Whitefield welcomed Bury mayor, Cllr Khalid Hussain JP, earlier this month as he answered questions during a school assembly.

The mayor also officially appointed Year 6 children into their new roles as head boy, head girl, deputy head boy and deputy head girl.

They will be leading by example and setting high expectations for the rest of the school to follow.

Head boy Charlie, 10, said: “It was an honour to receive my head boy badge from the mayor- I was very excited to meet him."

Cllr Hussain was appointed in May and has served as head of two racial equality councils (RECs) and as a civil servant in the Ministry of Justice.

Headteacher Trish Grogan said: "It was an honour to have the mayor visit us.

"The children asked some very well thought out questions including some about his previous roles as the head of the racial equality council.

“The mayor officially appointed some of our Y6 pupils into their new leadership positions- something they will never forget.
