Residents have expressed their shock after a shooting outside a Bury town centre bar on Wednesday night.

A section of Silver Street was cordoned off after the shooting, which happened at 11.43pm.

Armed police, alongside the ambulance service, attended and found a 39-year-old man had been shot in his wrist.

Paramedics treated the victim and took him to hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

Within an hour of the police responce, officers arrested a 19-year-old man on Larch Street on suspicion of attempted murder and he remains in custody for questioning.

The cordon was in place between the junction of Market Street and where Society bar is, just further up from Broad Street.

Two police cars, one police van and around four officers were present on Thursday morning.

The bars within the cordon are Stanleys and House of Bridget, however, it has not been specified which bar the incident took place outside of.

One woman in the area on Thursday said: “There’s always trouble down Silver Street, but it is worrying that it’s a shooting.

“Other incidents have been fights and stabbings. I’d be worried about going out down there.”

Another said: “I heard about the incident this morning (Thursday).

“It is concerning that there are people carrying guns in this area, especially in areas where young people go out.

“I know Silver Street has a reputation, but this isn’t good at all.”

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Andy Day, from Bury's police division, said: “This was a shocking attack, and an example of the type of violence that has no place in our community.

"A man has been seriously injured as a result of a senseless shooting and the lives of others were put in harm's way.

"It is vital that those responsible are brought to justice.

“While it is early in our investigation, we believe this to be an isolated attack with no wider threat to the community.

“We have a man in custody and numerous evidential opportunities are being followed.

"There will be an increase in officers around the area in the coming days as we continue to investigate and provide a reassuring presence to the community.

"If you have any concerns, please do stop and speak with them.

“We are urging anyone with information that will help our investigation to come forward.

“If you were in the area on Wednesday evening and saw or heard anything suspicious or have CCTV or dashcam footage that could help us with our enquiries, we ask you to contact 101 quoting log 3,717 of 23/10/2024.

“Any information, no matter how small, could help us find those who are responsible.”
