Dozens of reptiles were given a health check in Bury at a tortoise weigh-in event which welcomed new owners and "old faithfuls".

The Northern Region of the British Chelonia Group (BCG) runs the event twice a year anyone who needs advice or wants their pet to have a free examination.

It is organised by BCG chairman John Thorpe and the latest event took place on Saturday at the United Reformed Church on Parsons Lane in Bury from 10am to 4pm.

The purpose is to give owners the information which will help them to keep their animals healthy and happy, and as part of this, their weight and size is checked.

The events also to help to "spread the word about sensible advice on the care of these often misunderstood animals".

Veterinary surgeon from Valley Vetcare in Rochdale, Vince Wager, and vet Nicole Mann, of Pennine Vets in Tottington, were on hand to carry out the checks along with John.

John reported the event was "judged a success by everyone involved", feedback was "very positive as it usually is" and there were only a "few serious problems encountered".

"We'd like to thank our vets who gave up their valuable time freely, the people at the United Reformed Church, who made us welcome, and most of all the concerned owners who took the trouble to travel to the event on behalf of their animals."
