Bryan Ly scored a dramatic late penalty as Bury came from behind to stun Radcliffe in the FA Cup third qualifying round.
It seemed there would be nothing to separate the sides after 90 minutes when Josh Wardle fired home from close range.
However, Ly made no mistake from the spot after Ruben Jerome had been tripped in the box to secure a memorable victory on the road for Dave McNabb’s side.
The football was secondary in many ways, with tributes paid to Paul Hilton ahead of kick-off following the sad death of the Radcliffe chairman.
Flowers were laid outside the ground and a minute’s applause was held, with some supporters breaking into a chant of, ‘There’s only one Paul Hilton’. Wreaths were carried onto the pitch along with a banner which read, ‘Our chairman, one of our own’.
Radcliffe made one change, with former Bolton and Norwich youngster Regan Riley coming into the midfield.
Tunde Owolabi did not make the squad following his return to the club a couple of days prior, penning an initial one-year deal.
Meanwhile, Bury made a couple of changes with skipper Gaz Peet and Lewis Alessandra coming in for Ben Hockenhull and Ly. Goalkeeper Richard Cowderoy was named on the bench after joining from Marine on dual registration to provide emergency cover.
The hosts got off to a quick start when Anthony Dudley latched onto Brad Roscoe’s pass and provided a composed finish inside the opening 10 minutes.
Dudley was then brought down by former Radcliffe man Bebeto Gomes, with Wardle crashing a header off the post from the resulting free kick as Radcliffe cranked up the pressure in search of a second goal.
Bury grew into the game as the half went on and threatened an equaliser when Rustam Stepens found space inside the box and lifted the ball over Mateusz Hewelt, only for Roscoe to make a vital clearance.
Radcliffe went close early in the second half when Dudley played in Jordan Hulme, who sent a low drive just wide of the post.
The Shakers got back on level terms at the other end when Sam Coughlan curled a clever free kick into the bottom corner.
The next phase was scrappy but the tie exploded into life heading into the final 10 minutes, with Mitch Allen making a fine stop to tip Isaac Modi’s header wide at full stretch.
Bury completed the turnaround moments later when Jerome’s strike trickled over the line despite the efforts of Hewelt.
Wardle handed the hosts a lifeline with an instinctive finish after Bury had failed to deal with Nicky Adams’ free kick.
But there was a final twist in the tale as the defender was caught on the ball by Jerome and was judged to have brought him down inside the area. Ly kept his cool from 12 yards to send the travelling supporters into raptures.
Allen made another heroic save in stoppage time as Radcliffe searched desperately for a reprieve, although they finished with 10 men after Matt Sargent was shown a second yellow card.
