A vigil took place  in memory of those who have been lost to suicide.

The event marked World Suicide Prevention Day when organisations around the world get together to raise awareness around suicide prevention.

The memory walk began at Kay Gardens and continued to Castle Leisure Centre on Bolton Street where flowers were laid at a dedicated memorial stone.

Cllr Tariq Tamoor, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member, Health and Wellbeing said: “World Suicide Prevention Day is an important opportunity to remind ourselves that looking after our own mental health and helping others is very important.

“It can affect anyone, but it’s important to know that support is available.

“Being able to have conversations with someone you know is struggling and getting them to open up makes such a difference.

“The work of our partners is key to supporting anyone who is struggling.

“I was delighted to join the walk organised by the Big Fandango and wanted to pay tribute to its founder Rebecca Jackson, and Jacqui and Ian Young for sharing their personal story about losing a family member to suicide.

“It was both poignant and moving.”

The group carried yellow flags and sunflowers to represent each life lost since the event began three years ago and music was provided by Bury Fire Choir and Bloco Asha Samba Group.
