Long-serving teachers who have chalked up more than 70 years between them were surprised with a huge celebration.

Gorsefield Primary School in Radcliffe surprised Sally Lobley, Jackie Smith and Joan Emmett with a whole school celebration of their commitment to the school.

Sally Lobley celebrated 30 years as a teacher at the school, which is governed by Bolton based Forward As One CE Multi-Academy Trust.

She has taught across all year groups and has led in various capacities across the school.

Assistant principal Jay Brown said: “Mrs Lobley certainly isn't retiring, but we wanted to acknowledge her incredible service to our school and the teaching profession.”

Jackie Smith celebrated 34 years as a teacher and is now retiring.

She was described as an amazing teacher across all year groups and has been instrumental in supporting the school’s rapid development.

She’s now looking forward to spending more time travelling and being with family.

Joan Emmett celebrated 24 years as a teaching assistant and worked tirelessly to care and nurture some of the youngest children and families.

Mr Brown said: “She has been a significant figure in our PSA, raising thousands of pounds for school.

“Mrs Emmett is retiring from her role, but we know we won't be able to keep her away from fundraising events in the future!”

To celebrate these milestones, the school held a surprise assembly with all the children.

Staff read out speeches before the whole school moved outside for a tree planting ceremony.

The three staff members were joined by Gorsefield’s head boy, head girl and their deputies to plant apple trees on the school site as a symbol of wisdom and growth.
