A unique tribute has been created in memory of a late Greater Manchester drag performer who lived in Bury.

Ahead of the city’s Pride weekend celebrations, which run from today, Friday, to Monday, a master model builder has created an intricate LEGO mosaic portrait of Manchester’s Foo Foo Lammar.

The performer, singer and club owner lived in Shuttleworth, Bury, and was one of the North West’s most beloved entertainers.

Born Frank Pearson, he played a pivotal role in establishing Manchester as a one of Britain’s leading LGBTQ+ cities.

Designed and created by Jacob McPeake, who is a master model builder at Manchester LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, the mosaic took approximately 18 hours to build.

It highlights Foo Foo's colourful persona, featuring their trademark blonde bouffant wig and iconic dangling earrings, complete with a rainbow border and a giant 3D bee.

He said: “We are beyond delighted to unveil this tribute to Foo Foo Lammar.

"Their legacy continues to resonate throughout Manchester and beyond.

“Creating this mosaic has been an honour and I hope it brings joy and pride to everyone celebrating in Manchester this August.

“It took a lot of imagination and over 9,000 LEGO pieces to create the artwork, so to see the final creation is really special.”

Foo Foo purchased his first club, the Picador, in Shudehill in 1971 which quickly became a premier nightspot for Manchester United players and showbiz stars.

Lammar fundraised for charities like the Christie, where he was treated for cancer before he died on November 7, 2003 aged 65.

Jacob added: “We decided to incorporate the bee, an emblem of Manchester, into the mosaic as a symbol of the city’s resilience and community spirit.

“On top of that, this year’s Manchester Pride is ‘buzzing to be queer’, so it fits together perfectly!”
