A Bury FC fan has released a new anthem about the club, which celebrates The Shakers' history.

Emergency worker Matthew Collister, 34, teaches guitar lessons in his free time and has created new single, The Shakers.

It was recorded at Pinhole Sound Studio in Manchester with professional musicians and producers at a cost of almost £3,000.

Originally from the Isle of Man, Matthew moved to Bury four years ago and was inspired by the club’s rich history.

He said: “I’d not been involved in music since my late teens but during a visit to Bury, I saw how the stadium on Gigg Lane had been left to rot, with overgrown grass and rusted turnstiles.

“It had seen better days. I got speaking to a gent there who told me about the impact that the club closure had on the town.

“It was more than just football – it was much deeper rooted than that.

“It was about the wider impact on the community, giving people something to do and a place to come together.

“I started thinking about the song back then, but the timing wasn’t quite right.”

Established in 1885, the club was expelled from the English Football League in 2019 and placed into administration a year later.

Gigg Lane was later bought by a fan group who began efforts to bring professional football back to Bury.

It was only when Matthew was teaching guitar lessons to a Bury FC fan's daughter around six months ago that the idea of the song resurfaced.

He had “fallen in love” with the town and wanted to create something which fans and the club could enjoy.

Matthew, who goes by the name Collly for his music, added: “I wanted to keep it simple and reflect the town, including a nod to the world famous market stalls and Holcombe Hill - I adore Bury.

“It [the song] might not be for everyone but I’ve tried to make it as appealing as possible.

“I have been supported by other musicians with roots in the community.

“It was a big team effort from the producers to the photographers and everyone else involved.”

The Shakers by Collly was released on Tuesday, August 20 and features Manchester singer Sav Bea.

It is available on Spotify and iTunes.
