An animal sanctuary whose vet costs have risen to £40,000 per month is appealing for donations.
Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary in Edenfield was founded in 1967 when one lady rescued a donkey from slaughter.
It now stretches over 55 acres of land and houses around 200 animals, while helping around 1,000 animals in total each year.
Horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, sheep, and birds live permanently at Bleakholt, while dogs, cats, and small animals spend time until they are rehomed.
However, the rising incidence of animals arriving with urgent medical conditions has led to a significant increase in vet costs.
The sanctuary costs around £1.6m to run annually, and relies mostly on donations.
Sanctuary manager Karen Weed said: "In July alone our veterinary costs were £40,000 which is huge.
"We had one dog Cookie who needed eye surgery, Fudge had to have a fatty mass removed, and Frog came in such a mess and needed drastic ear surgery.
"A rabbit, William, came into us as a welfare case with a large wound on his abdomen which needed an operation.
"Just this week a chocolate labrador called George has come in with a severe flea allergy and Westie Alfie has severe mange and an ear infection.
"And that's not naming every cat, dog, and rabbit which needs treatment or ongoing attention for our animals who live permanently with us.
"Our motto is: 'Care for those who have no-one,' and we want to continue to be there for every animal which needs us.
"We hate to ask as we know times are difficult, but if anyone is able to donate towards our vet costs we would be extremely grateful.
"This will allow our sanctuary to continue to help the animals that most desperately need us."
Those wishing to donate can do so at www.bleakholt.org.
