An animal shelter is desperate to rehome a dog and her puppy in the UK, after they were found injured and abandoned on the Russian border - with a Bury volunteer also helping the appeal.
They were found by Rosie Turner, one of the founders of the shelter, Desperate Dogs of Azerbaijan, after she was alerted to their plight.
Jules, aged four, and Verne, her puppy, were taken to the shelter, treated for their injuries, and will be flown into Manchester on November 1.
Debbie Davis, from Chester, is a volunteer working to rehome Jules and Verne after learning about their ordeal.
She said: “They were found in a very poor way and rushed back to Baku (capital city of Azerbaijan) which takes about three hours.
“We’re pretty sure what happened was they had been attacked by wild animals.
“There were originally six pups but five had already been killed.
“The mum was with the remaining pup desperately trying to protect him.
“She lost an eye as a result of the attack.”
They were taken to a vet and then put in foster care.
The rescue shelter is aiming to home Jules and Verne together, due to their close bond, and identify an adopter before they travel to the UK.
Debbie said: ‘They touched a lot of hearts from our group because they are so bonded.
“That’s why we need to find them a home together.
“We really want to get them into the UK because we feel they deserve it.
“They’re such lovely dogs and they will make fantastic pets.”
Carol West, 78, from Bury, has been rescuing dogs for more than 45 years, and is working with Desperate Dogs of Azerbaijan to support Jules and Verne until they find a home.
Carol said: “I came across these two on Facebook and just had to help them.
“She’s fought so hard for her pup after losing all the others; they are bonded.
“They took a piece of my heart and deserve a loving home.”
Desperate Dogs of Azerbaijan has been rescuing and bringing Dogs to the UK for over a year and aims to bring over 10 every year.
The shelter relies on support through volunteers and donations to conduct its vital work in rescuing dogs, treating them, and finding them new homes in the UK.
A tireless amount of work goes into sorting flights and travel for dogs from Azerbaijan to the UK, which is not easy and very costly.
“It’s not an easy process and we’re limited to the numbers we can bring because there’s only one airline, we can use to fly them out of Az which is Polish Airlines,” Debbie said.
“They’re the only ones that will carry animals in the hold and it’s a maximum of two dogs.
“The route we must do is Baku to Warsaw to Paris because it costs too much to bring dogs directly to the UK.
“We then drive them from Paris back to the UK.
“We always have to have flight buddies travelling with them.”
The need for adopters is heightened by the fact that rescues in the UK are often too full and unable to take in more.
“We have contacted a lot of rescues, but the trouble is they are all absolutely bursting at the seams.
“There are many dogs needing homes”.
“We have contacted literally hundreds of rescues in the UK, and they’ve all had to say no”.
Debbie said that rehoming Jules and Verne together would be a major target reached, as the shelter, which currently has 128 dogs and 29 cats, continues its tireless work.
Both dogs are medium-sized (around 20-23kg) and are good with other dogs, cats and children.
They are fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and micro-chipped.

The shelter also has a GoFundMe crowdfunding page which people can visit to donate towards their rescue, treatment, and travel costs, and ensure they can continue to rehome dogs in the UK.
