A care home in Bury has received a “good” rating after being previously placed in “special measures” by a healthcare watchdog.

Burrswood Care Home was previously rated as “inadequate” after an inspection by the Quality Care Commission (CQC) in August last year.

The latest report, published on July 16, found that the service had improved since the preceding inspection at the Newton Street home, which had found seven breaches of legal requirements.

It noted that there had been positive changes to the leadership and management, that safe management of medicines had significantly improved and that people felt safe and well-cared for.

Managed by Advinia Care Homes Limited, Burrswood provides nursing or personal care and the treatment of disease, disorder and injury for up to 125 people.

The report stated that the home had been proactive in promoting a culture of safety and that there had been vast improvements in the safe management of medicines.

But it pointed out that there were still some issues and the CQC received mixed feedback from relatives regarding staffing issues.

Some medicines were not always administered in line with the manufacturers’ directions, however, the management team updated records immediately.

One relative commented: “I don’t think the patient to staff ratio is enough. There is a senior and there should be four to five staff members on each unit.”

The report noted that rotas showed a consistent staff team were on duty at all times and dependency levels were reviewed monthly.

Staff felt well-supported to speak up and share concerns with the new management team in place and that there was” less emphasis on blame and more emphasis on learning from events”.

A resident at the home said: "I get up and go to bed by myself and I can go out into town on my own using my bus pass."
