A Bury family is hosting a memorial football match in the town to remember their late dad.
The Hannah family aim to raise funds for Bury Hospice in memory of Jon-Paul Hannah, known locally as Ted, at the event taking place at Westbury Sports Club today (July 6).
Ted was a volunteer coach for several grassroots clubs including Radcliffe Borough and Westbury Cobras. He died in February 2024 aged 40 after being diagnosed with cancer in late 2023.
The Manchester United fan grew up in Walmersley and was looked after at home by teams from Bury Hospice during his short illness.
Ted’s wife Karen Hannah, 42, said: “At Ted’s funeral, we asked for charity donations instead of flowers but soon released that hosting an event would have a more significant reach.”
The couple lived together in Radcliffe for more than 18 years and share four children. Two of their sons were coached by Ted and will playing football on the day.
The memorial match and fun day will consist of two friendly matches.
Westbury Grown Ups and Andy’s Man Club, where Ted was a facilitator, will be competing in the adult match. Westbury Cobras and Ted’s Cubs will be playing in a children’s game.
“Me and the children thought this would be a brilliant way to honour Ted alongside the fundraising. He was a much-loved member of the community and gave them so much. This is our way of doing the same in his name,” added Karen.
The family-friendly event is open to everyone. There will be a bouncy castle, BBQ, play area, ice cream stand and garden games alongside the matches for guests of all ages to enjoy.
Local businesses have donated generous raffle prizes with tickets available to buy on the day.
It will take place from 1pm on Saturday, July 6 at Westbury Sports Club, The Barracks, Bexley Dr, Bury BL8 2XD.
