A restaurant has closed its doors permanently after more than two years in business.

Colleen's on Bridge Street in Ramsbottom first opened in March 2022, but on Monday morning it announced it had closed its doors for the final time the day before on Sunday.

In a statement on social media, co-owners, husband-and-wife team Thomas and Ellen Morgan, said that keeping the establishment open was no longer sustainable.

They said: “This wasn’t an easy decision to come to and we could blame numerous things- the cost-of-living crisis/lack of government support/increase in costs across our whole operation, but simply put, it’s just not sustainable for us anymore.

“Despite this and the struggles we have faced since opening, we are immensely proud to be able to achieve what we set out to do.

"Providing a great work environment, championing local suppliers and serving great food & drinks.”

The venue was named after Thomas’ late grandma and has supported local businesses by using fish from Bury Market, meat from Accrington and bread from Burnley.

The couple have both worked in the hospitality sector since they were teenagers and even hosted their own wedding at the restaurant.

They added: “We couldn’t have done any of this over the past few years without our incredibly hard-working team and some wonderful customers who we are incredibly grateful for!

"Hopefully we will get to serve you again somewhere one day.”

The restaurant was awarded joint first place at the This is Manchester Awards 2023 in the Leading Restaurant Award (Casual) category against names such as The Ivy Spinningfields and The Refuge.

Commenting on the Facebook post, Labour councillor Gareth Staples-Jones said: “Gutted to hear this, very tough times for our high street - but Colleen's Ramsbottom dished out some incredible food, always in a warm and friendly environment, created by people with brilliant ambition.

"Best of luck with whatever you choose to do next!”

The news comes after several establishments closed in the market town last year including Spanish-restaurant Levanter the Chocolate Café and bar, Ramsbottom Social.
