A man was bundled into a car by masked men who attacked him with a hammer, demanded money from his mum before a crash after a high speed police chase.

The group of four were in a car on March 4 last year on Gigg Lane in Bury, all wearing balaclavas, when they spotted their victim on the street.

Bolton Crown Court heard two of the men got out of the car, attacked him and bundled him into the vehicle while another group member was holding a hammer and the victim's hood was pulled over his head, causing him to struggle breathing.

Summing up the case, Judge Martin Walsh said Macari Jackson drove the car and Neeko Smith was the front passenger, with Ronald Maketo and Rhys Baker in the back.

During the ordeal, the victim’s brother was phoned, and the victim had his own phone taken and was struck to the head with the hammer.

Police were informed and officers spent the next three-and-a-half hours trying to find the vehicle.

The men eventually arrived in Salford and phoned the victim’s mum, telling her that £1,500 needed to be paid by the end of the day.

The victim was then assaulted again, threatened with an axe and they also said they would cut off his ear.

Eventually police located the vehicle and a chase followed.

The car was driven at dangerous speeds through Salford and Prestwich of more than 90mph and also 150mph on the motorway.

The pursuit eventually came to an end after the car left the motorway and crashed with another vehicle.

A knife was thrown from the car during the pursuit but police found hammers in the vehicle.

In a victim impact statement, the victim said that he had been fearful for his life.

He was taken to hospital for puncture wounds.

All four defendants pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

Jackson admitted an extra charge of dangerous driving and Smith pleaded guilty to possession of Class B drugs.

Judge Walsh sentenced Jackson, 25, of Lawndale Drive, Worsley, to eight years and nine months.

He will also be disqualified from driving for four years and will have to retake his test.

Maketo, 21, of Fairy Lane, Manchester, was sentenced to seven years.

Baker, 24, of Howard Street, Radcliffe, was sentenced to eight years.

Smith, 21, of The Crescent, Prestwich, was sentenced to eight years.

They will each serve two thirds in custody and the rest on licence.
