A part of the M58 Westbound has been closed for several hours after a two HGVs and a car crashed.

The M58 has been closed westbound between the M6 J26 near Wigan and J3 near St. Helens due to a serious crash.

Emergency services are on scene after the huge accident this afternoon.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: "We were called at 12:57pm today to a report of a collision between three vehicles between junction 3 and junction 4 on the M58.

"We are in attendance, alongside partner agencies, and at this time, the motorway is closed between Junction 26 of the M6 and Junction 3 of the M58.

"We’d ask you to avoid the area, and we will bring you an update when we are able to."

The road was initially closed at around 12.50pm due to the crash.

Data system Inrix reported: "M58 Westbound closed due to accident investigation work at J4 A5068 Glenburn Road (Skelmersdale).

“Now only closed within the junction. Diversion: Via the exit and entry slip roads."

The road has been closed for several hours now.

North West Motorway Police Group and emergency services are in attendance.

National Highways Service Providers are also in attendance to assist with traffic management.

A spokesman for The National Highways said: “The #M58 is now only closed westbound within J4 (near #Skelmersdale).

Due to the nature of the incident, drivers are advised that the road is likely to remain closed for several hours and beyond peak times.

Road users are advised to follow the Solid Diamond diversion symbol on road signs.
