A motorway services between Heywood and Middleton is set to receive a £545,000 makeover following a cash injection from the government.
Birch Services, eastbound and westbound, next to junction 18 and 19 of the M62 has been named as one of 76 improvement areas identified by the Department for Transport to improve parking and driver welfare. The project has received £272,000 as part of the HGV Parking and Driver Welfare Match Funding Grant Scheme – half of the overall cost.
The overhaul will go towards improving HGV parking capacity; driver welfare facilities, including toilets, shower facilities, rest areas, truck wash facilities; security for drivers, including lighting systems, CCTV and monitoring equipment; and decarbonisation, including electric HGV charging infrastructure, alternative fuel installation.
The MP for Heywood and Middleton, Chris Clarkson, has welcomed this grant funding from the government – crediting it with improving conditions for drivers who regularly use this stretch of road.
He said: “The DfT’s investment at Birch Services will have a tremendous impact on drivers in Heywood & Middleton. I greatly welcome the Government’s commitment to drivers’ welfare and improving service station infrastructure locally and across the country.”
His statement went on to describe how this funding recognises the indispensable role of HGV drivers in maintaining the nation’s economy and supply chains by prioritising the improvement of facilities and services crucial for their well-being.
The investment in Birch Services exemplifies this commitment to supporting drivers and ensuring their access to quality amenities while on the road, Mr Clarkson added.
