Walmersley: 'Lovely' Victorian detached home on the market

Owned by Myles and Roxanne Davies, West Bank on Walmersley Road has been a labour of love for the couple for the last eight years.

And the couple have fully refurbished the house while maintaining its Victorian period feel.

Roxanne, originally from Yorkshire, and Myles, from Whitefield, lived in a new build house on a development site in Radcliffe before purchasing the property.

Roxanne said: “We bought a new build in Radcliffe, and we didn’t like it particularly well, and someone knocked on our door and couldn’t get a house on the development so offered us a cash deal for our house.

“Because we weren’t very happy there, we were always looking on Rightmove before this happened.”

While looking on Rightmove, Myles spotted West Bank was up for sale.

The house used to belong to his uncle and Myles often visited when he was a child.

The couple knocked on the door, offered to buy the house, and they sold their Radcliffe home and bought West Bank within two days.

Roxanne said: “We’ve been renovating the house ever since. We totally gutted it because even though my husband’s uncle owned it 35 years ago nothing had changed décor wise.

“We’ve turned it into a lovely, period Victorian family home.”

Its location is a big selling point and the couple have fallen in love with Walmersley.

Roxanne said: “We are looking to sell now but I’ve fallen in love with Walmersley.

“For someone who’s from out of town, I feel like it’s a hidden gem of Bury because for me, I need to access the motorway for work and then we have the Metrolink to get into Manchester and we also have all the countryside on our doorstep.

“I love the fact we skip all the traffic that comes from Ramsbottom and Greenmount.

“I just feel like out of all the places in Bury, you get so much more for your money house wise and it’s just the perfect little hotspot if you work and there are good schools.

"Bury Grammar is down the road, it’s just a great little area that’s so underrated.”

The neighbours have also commented that they have kept the character of the property.

The last thing they completed was the porch, in which they spent four times the amount that a normal PVC porch would cost as they wanted it to look Victorian and like it had always been there.

Roxanne added: “There’s loads of history to the house, we found some old photos when the first tram lines were built outside, and we have the original deeds.

“Along the way we’ve found signatures and names of previous owners on the old skirting boards which are lovely little nuggets of history.

“It’s been a project of love and it’s quite romantic to the house, we’ve kept all the little keepsakes in a folder for the next homeowners.

“I’m feeling quite emotional about leaving because you don’t come across properties like this very often.”

The couple have decided to move as they have a growing family, with two children already.

The three-bedroom detached property is on the market currently for £625,000.
