A renowned record store in the heart of Bury has celebrated a “massive success” on its biggest day of the year.

This comes as Wax and Beans on Market Street marks Record Store Day, which celebrates vinyl outlets all over the world.

Co-owner Ben Soothill says that Saturday April 20 this year may well have been the biggest Record Store Day the Bury outlet has ever hosted.

He said: “It’s probably been the biggest Record Store Day we’ve had out of the four years we’ve been doing it, so it really was a massive success for us.”

People came from all over the country to check out the wares at Wax and Beans, with the very first people queuing up at 9.30am on Saturday morning having come all the way from Hull.

They had come to Bury after their own local record shop stopped celebrating Record Store Day and joined people queuing all around the block on Saturday morning.

But luckily, they and people from elsewhere had plenty of classic and new records to choose from at Wax and Beans, available exclusively from the store.

Ben said: “That’s why it generates such hype and creates such a huge queue because you can’t do pre-orders, its got to be first come first-served.”

Ben said that this year saw a particularly mixed crowd with people across all age groups and males and females equally represented.

Particularly popular releases provided to be new singles by Noel Gallagher, Oliva Rodrigo and a B-sides and out takes collection by The Verve.

A collaboration between Talking Heads star David Byrne and Paramour also turned out to be a popular choice.

By mid-Saturday afternoon Wax and Beans had already sold around half of the stock that staff had specially brought in, with more sales to come on Sunday.

The Market Street store rounded off the day with a series of live performances including from Manchester rockers Northside, celebrating the reissue of their 1991 album Chicken Rhythms.

After scoring their biggest success yet this year, Ben and his colleagues are hoping to bring the event back again next year.
