Four of five lanes were closed and delays continued for a couple of hours, with four miles of congestion backed up to junction 21 for (Oldham) on the M60.

A spokesperson from the National Highways North West said: "One lane was open at all times.

"At least one van and three other cars were involved, so four in all."

There was also another crash, but it was a low-impact crash involving three cars on the M60 J12 clockwise (M62 Eccles Interchange), which caused delays up to J13 Worsley Brow.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "It happened at 9.55am.

"Three cars were involved and no injuries.

"However, we had to close a lane off so we could safely remove the vehicles from the carriageway.

"It was right at Junction 12 on the clockwise.

"We have had two patrols of National Highways traffic officers on the scene from the Rob Lane outstation at Newton-le-Willows to move the cars out of the other lanes to get traffic moving again."

Traffic has now returned to normal following the incidents, and all lanes have been reopened.
