Children in Bury have been learning how to develop a career working in the built environment this week.

Seven young people, who have experienced being in care or looked after, were treated to a careers development seminar by the council’s Joint Venture Partner Muse Places.

The built environment touches all aspects of people’s lives, from the buildings we live in, the distribution systems that provide us with water and electricity, and the roads, bridges, and transportation systems we use to get from place to place.

Professionals from Muse, Asteer Planning and John Matthews Architects provided an overview of opportunities to develop a career in this sector.

Council officers also explained similar opportunities in the local government sector and the benefits of a career in public service.

The children were able to see and talk about the plans for a new heart for Prestwich through the Bury/Muse Prestwich Village Regeneration project and other developments visible from Muse’s Salford offices.

Councillor Lucy Smith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “Our young people were really inspired by the day, and it helped them to see that there are lots of different ways to achieve what they want. I would like to thank all those involved in organising.

“We would like to organise more and more of these events for our care experienced young people.

“Hearing life stories from a whole range of businesses across Bury really helps to raise aspirations.”

Councillor Alan Quinn, Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change and Operations said: “Our kids provided some excellent feedback on plans for Prestwich and posed some challenging questions to the professionals.

“I hope the day gave them a good idea of what a career in civil engineering and the built environment means and encourages them to think about it.

“I'd like to thank Muse for helping our kids in care, they said when they started the regeneration work in Prestwich that they wanted to get involved in the community.

“With this initiative and their generous sponsorship of local events, they certainly have.

“The council is currently planning the next event to keep up momentum and encourage our kids into good jobs in the building and property industries.”
