Meet Bury’s new ambassador to Russia!
In 1966, Ian Brown, 17, was to head to Moscow as a junior ambassador for paper making giants Walmsley’s for a two-week trade fair.
Ian, of Bury Road Tottington, had been named the most promising first-year apprentice at the company’s training school.
He would be taking with him a magnificent scale model of Walmsley’s new £1m board making machine which apprentices had spent six months building.
The working model had thousands of hand made parts and more than 80 rollers which turned pulp into cardboard. The model was being insured for £3,500 for the Moscow trip.
