Every January, Bury Hospice arranges for real Christmas trees to be collected from across the borough, to be recycled and repurposed.

This year’s collection saw a team of committed volunteers brave the cold weather to load up vans with hundreds of trees over a single weekend period (Friday, January 12 to Sunday, January 14).

One thousand trees were collected in two days, and more than 300 more were picked up on the third.

Donations, which support the provision of palliative and end-of-life care, were pledged for each tree collected.

Dale Mulgrew, events fundraiser at the hospice, said: “Thank you to all our hardworking and dedicated team of volunteers for their superb efforts collecting more than 1,300 Christmas trees.

“And a thank you to one of the volunteers, Alan Whittall, for arranging a €1000 donation from his company, Voith, for the collection.”

We couldn’t have completed such a systematic operation if it wasn’t for the fantastic team of volunteers who donated their time to make sure the Christmas tree collection scheme was a huge success.

Volunteer opportunities at the hospice are varied and cover a multitude of opportunities ranging from: Christmas tree collections, administrative roles, or warehouse support, to name but a few options.

We are currently looking for people who can spare some free time to help in some of our hospice shops, particularly on the weekends.

We have shops in Bury, Prestwich, Radcliffe and Ramsbottom, and they all help to raise vital funds to ensure the running of Bury Hospice.

As a shop volunteer, you would be welcomed into an enthusiastic team and will have the chance to get involved with various tasks such as sorting, preparing and pricing stock prior to sale, working on the tills and shop floor, or even window dressing.

We welcome the skills and experience of our amazing volunteers and appreciate every bit of support they offer us daily.
