Two care homes which closed just weeks ago are the subject of planning applications to convert them into shared houses for up to 29 people.

In October, the decision to close both both the 14-bed Elizabeth House, Walshaw Road, Bury, and the nearby 18-bed Moorfields home on Tottington Road emerged.

Shocked residents at two care homes, some of whom were more than 100-years-old, were told to find alternative accommodation before October 31 after the sudden decision to close them.

Administrators Kroll, who had been running the homes since last November after the previous operator failed, decided to close the doors and auction off the vacant buildings.

They said they had been unable to sell the homes to new operators Stunned families of the 32 residents, many living with dementia or similar conditions, faced having to find a new place for their elderly relatives to live and staff were told they would be losing their jobs.

At the time the council said they were "shocked" to be informed of the decision and said the move had "caused families a great deal of concern".

This week, planning applications were submitted to the council to change the use of both former care homes in to houses of multiple occupation (HMOs).

Elizabeth House would be converted into a 13-bed shared house and Moorfields a 16-bed HMO.

The applicant is listed as a Bury-based Mr Khan for both applications.

No first name has been entered on the application forms.

The application for Moorfields said: “The scheme aims to provide a good standard of living with generous facilities.

“All rooms are for single occupation aligning with the space standards set out in the nationally described space standards.

“From the existing layout, rooms have been reduced from 18 to 16 bedrooms to allow for increased shower facilities.

“On the ground floor, ample shared common spaces include three kitchens with laundry, and two large lounge and dining spaces that ensure enough room to seat each person.”

The change of use applications will be decided by planners at the council in the coming weeks.
