Passengers have been urged to be polite and kind to their taxi drivers to keep people safe this Christmas.

Guidance has been drawn up to keep taxi drivers safe and encourage people to have a trouble-free journey over the busy Christmas season.

The guide includes tips, practices, and precautions to give drivers the skills needed to navigate the roads safely, handle various situations, and help to minimise the risk of violence and aggression.

A poster has been developed to inform members of the public to "treat taxi drivers and their vehicles with the respect they deserve, and they will get you where you are going to".

Passengers are being urged to be "polite, kind and not be verbally or physically abusive to the driver".

Cllr Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture and the economy, said: “Taxi and private hire drivers provide a valuable public service, particularly at a busy time like Christmas when many people will be out late celebrating.

“In most cases, there are no problems. But there are always some people who don’t know how to behave properly.

“That’s why we’re working with the trade to raise awareness and encourage everyone to have a good time and get home safely in peace.”

The guide was created by the council, Greater Manchester Police, and representatives of both the Hackney carriage and private hire trades.

The move has been welcomed by representatives of Bury Hackney Association and the Private Hire Drivers Association, who said it would safeguard the interests of the trade and address the evolving needs and expectations of passengers.
