Disruption to the Bury tram line this morning, Wednesday, was caused by the "theft of important track materials".
The Metrolink has been operating between Whitefield and Victoria with no services running between Bury and Radcliffe.
Although initially believed to have been caused by a "fault" the transport company have revealed that the disruption is due to the "theft of important track materials".
Engineers are currently investigating the full extent of the theft and a spokesperson said they hope services will resume by early afternoon and have apologised "for the inconvenience caused".
Tickets and passes continue to be accepted bus services: 95, 98, 135 and 524.
