Residents in Whitefield are campaigning to improve the safety of a road after a number of serious incidents.

Several people have died following accidents on Radcliffe New Road in recent years.

Resident Julie Davies approached Cllr Liz FitzGerald in June for a meeting after nearly being struck by a car while walking on the pavement.

Julie said: “The car had swerved onto the pavement to avoid another vehicle overtaking at high speed on the wrong side of the road.

“I felt something had to be done about drivers treating our road like a racetrack.”

The group had a meeting with Cllr FitzGerald where they discussed the issues, options and challenges.

Julie added: “We decided we wanted to take positive action to make Radcliffe New Road safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers to prevent more fatalities and accidents.”

During July, the group has been distributing a letter with a road safety survey in the Whitefield part of the road and will be moving down to Radcliffe during the second half of the month.

Residents have been out with councillors collecting the survey and there has been a great response on the doorstep.

Cllr FitzGerald added: “Seeing the community come together as we talk to them about the survey has been amazing.

“We’ve had people take copies in the pub to give out or put in shops, and I think this shows the strength of feeling about the issue.

“I’d like to thank Julie and the team but also those who have taken the time to complete the survey and are trusting us to deliver change for the community.

“It may take a lot of time and effort to make that change but by working together we give ourselves the best chance.”

Bury South MP Christian Wakeford joined the group at the launch of the survey too.

He said: “It’s been great to see their community leadership and I understand their concerns about speeding on Radcliffe new Road, it’s a significant issue we’ve been campaigning on.

“We know there isn’t enough funding for road safety, but, after we understand the results of the survey, I will continue to support the group to get the best outcome for the community.”

Once the feedback is pulled together the group will update the community and will use the findings to look for ways to improve road safety and the quality of life for residents on the road.
