Plans to build a “modern centrepiece” in Radcliffe with more than 100 new apartments, a bar and office spaces has been approved.

The application for the mixed-use development at a site on Green Street will see 132 new apartments, commercial units and office space will sit on the former site of a temporary Covid testing centre replace demolished swimming baths.

Developers WC Investments Ltd plan to build three apartment blocks, a bar, commercial units and office space for a major company at the site, listed as Building A, where it is proposed the homes would be let for market rent, would have 35 apartments.

Another site, Building B, would have 53 affordable rent flats and building C would consist of 44 rent to buy apartments.

Since the plans were made public, the council received 37 objections to the plans, with some stating Radcliffe is in need for more 2–3-bedroom family homes, rather than flats.

Others voiced concerns about lack of parking spaces and amenities.

The council's planning committee discussed the application in a meeting on Tuesday, June 27.

Radcliffe First deputy leader, Cllr Birchmore said public services in the town are already “stretched to the limit.”

She said: “There is already a high density of social housing for single residents in the area via six town housing and other providers.

"Residents have expressed concerns that Radcliffe is being treated as a dumping ground.

“All-in-all the proposed development does not address the requirements although I can see how it might tick a box for Bury Council.”

Labour councillor Debbie Quinn spoke in favour of the plans.

She said: “I think it’s a really sustainable development, it’s ideal for people who want to downsize.

“Its part of the regeneration of Radcliffe, it will be a tangible, positive thing for Radcliffe.”

The committee passed the plans with conditions with eight voting in favour and two against.
