Andy Burnham appealed for tighter restrictions on the use of fireworks after a resident raised concerns with the metro mayor.

The appeal came on BBC Radio Manchester this week when he appeared on In The Hotseat, a segment which allows callers to ask questions to Mr Burnham.

The presenter Gaz Drinkwater, in for Mike Sweeney, brought in one resident with concerns about the impact of fireworks on herself and others as well as pets.

Mr Burnham appealed for tighter restrictions on the use of fireworks in response.

Jackie, from Prestwich, said: "My point is about fireworks going on and on and on all the time. It's every month and sometimes it's a couple of times a week.

"I don't know what it's all about, whether it's to do with celebrations or with religious events, but the point is it should be in November when we're used to it.

"I don't sleep well so when I go to sleep I want to go to sleep not listen to fireworks.

"It isn't right, and I think there should be controlled times when you can set them off, not after midnight."

Mr Burnham said: "You've put it so well, Jackie, and I think you're speaking for a lot of people today.

"You're not saying ban them outright but you're saying there needs to be tighter regulation of their use and the noise levels and I think that's absolutely right and I would support it. In fact I used to support it in parliament [as Leigh MP] when I used to vote in favour of it when this issue came up."

Mr Burnham added: "If it can't be done then I think GMP have talked about a ban because you can't have people have their lives ruined like this.

"It matters to a lot of people who listen to In The Hotseat and, Jackie, you're speaking for them today."
