A community group leader in Radcliffe has raised thousands of pounds for causes after a two-week trek across Scotland.

Graham Gledhill, the president of the Radcliffe Rotary Club, took part in the Great Outdoor Challenge, a walking expedition from West to East Scotland to raise money for charitable causes in and around Radcliffe.

The challenge, which began in 1980, takes place every year and attracts walkers from around the world looking to get closer to nature and experience the great outdoors.

The two-week long challenge takes around 340 ramblers on a 220-mile journey across the country.

Graham, 76, began his journey at Acharacle, a small village near Loch Shiel and finished at Kinnaber Links.

Graham, who has completed the walk once before in 2019, said the exhibition was a challenge but worth the effort.

He said: “You have to walk about 15 miles a day and usually you’re climbing up mountain ranges.

“Some days you feel like you don’t want to do it!”

However, he added the challenge inspires excellent comradery among fellow walkers who help each other, and the event gives people a chance to meet up with friends old and new.

Graham, who completed the walk with friend Stewart Potter, mostly camped but also stayed in B&Bs along the way.

One particular highlight of the trip, which ran from May 10 to 25, was a visit to Glen Feshie, an area within the Cairngorm National Park.

Graham also saw a spectacular array of wildlife, including Ospreys, Eagles and Oyster Catchers.

So far, he has raised around £2,000 for charity through sponsorship and hopes to reach a target of £3,000.

Graham added: “Fundraising has been more difficult as a result of lockdown.

“I used the opportunity to give our fundraising a boost.

“I’ve come back feeling invigorated to raise more funds.”

The money will go towards supporting a number of projects through the Radcliffe Rotary Club, including well building in Cameroon, foodbanks, gardening projects at Radcliffe schools many more.
