Bury Hearing Hub is celebrating is raising awareness of what life can be like for the deaf and hard of hearing today and tomorrow.

Deaf Awareness Week, which began yesterday, May 1, and runs until Sunday, May 7, will be celebrated at Bury Hearing Hub at a special open day.

The hub, based on Tenterden Street in Bury, will host its open day today, Tuesday, May 2, from 1pm until 3.30pm for people to find out more about its services.

The hub will also be hosting a British Sign Language social event with food and drinks provided tomorrow, Wednesday, May 3.

Charity manager Mark O'Brien said that although it will be informative, the main aim for the day is to focus on meeting new people in a "relaxed" environment.

He said: “It is all about hearing loss and coming together to share experiences and meet new people in a relaxed and safe environment.

“As well as that, I think it would be a really good opportunity for people to come and find out what we're all about.”

There will also be a host of speakers at the event tomorrow who are not part of the organisation who will offer a wider range of services to support people.

This will include the council's Connect and Direct service, Six Town Housing, Audiology, and Sarabec.

The event will be held at 8 Tenterden Street, Bury.
