Pay disputes in the NHS are nothing new as this photograph from July 1974 illustrates.
It shows an official picket staged by technical staff outside what was then Bury and District General Hospital. The technicians were backed by the unions in demanding a pay review.
The year would see a whole series of strikes across the country. These had led to the introduction of a three-day week for a two month period earlier in the year after miners walked out and power supplies were severely disrupted.
