Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited Bury Market

Rishi Sunak's visit was such a surprise that no one other than the Tory Party seemed to know about it.

However, he proved to be a big hit among shoppers on the busy market day.

He was seen outside the fish and meat market.

The PM posed for selfies as he spoke to stall-holders at the market.

Many people were unaware that the PM Mr Sunak was due in Bury Market which he has visited before.

Pictures emerged on the website Flickr taken by a photographer.

Shortly after, the PM made a swift exit and left for Rochdale.

The PM has been to Bury before for his last leadership election to win over people.

The PM also famously confused Bury with Burnley in a speech, when he said it was the 'world-famous Burnley market' during an interview with BBC Breakfast.

The visit came as the Bury Times announced plans to transform Bury Market are set to take a step forward as the council looks to acquire a key property.

In late 2021 the government signed off £20m of levelling up money for a proposed new flexihall and market canopy.

And last month it emerged the council was given approval for the removal of market canopies ahead of the works.

The buildings which were given permission to be demolished are the market offices, a single building with three retail units on Princess Parade and a building next to that containing restaurant space and the former Admiral gambling unit.
