A club has paid tribute to a "well known figure on the local football scene" who died after a horror crash in Whitefield last week.

Prestwich Heys AFC has paid respect to Paddy McCafferty, who died aged 76 after a crash on Radcliffe New Road.

Emergency services were called following the collision between a lorry and pedestrian Mr McCafferty at around 1.30pm on Wednesday, March 15.  

The 55-year-old driver remained at the scene.

Dubbed "great company with time for everyone", the club says that Paddy will be missed and has honoured him as a former manager, Club official and teacher in its tribute.

A Prestwich Heys AFC spokesperson said: “It is with sadness the club has learned of the passing of Paddy McCafferty following a road traffic accident in Whitefield.

“Paddy was a well-known figure on the local football scene.  

“He was manager of the Parkside Football team that enjoyed much success in the South East Lancashire League in the early 1980s.  

“He then saw many of that side move to Heys and form the nucleus of the side that won the Manchester League Division One title in 1986 and came within a whisker of winning the Premier Division the following season under Steve Braithwaite. 

“In 1995-96 Paddy was to become joint manager at Heys with Mark McGee before then becoming involved at the club away from the playing side, most notably as Groundsman in the Adie Moran era. 

“Paddy also turned his hand to writing match reports too. 

“Paddy was also well known as a match official, refereeing and running the line in the Bury Sunday League. 

“By profession, he was a teacher and will be remembered by many at Stand Grammar. 

“Always great company and with time for everyone, he will sadly be missed. 

“We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. 

“Rest in Peace, Paddy.” 

Last week, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) appealed for witnesses of the collision to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: “Anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or believes they have any CCTV or dashcam footage, should contact GMP’s Serious Collison Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 1594-15/32023.

“Anyone with information is asked to report it online or by using the LiveChat service at www.gmp.police.uk.
