Several roads in Elton will be resurfaced as part of multi-million plans to improve Bury's highways in the next few years.

Hillyard Street, David Street, Elson Street, Walmsley Street are among the roads that will be resurfaced as part of the council's third Highways Investment Strategy.

Worcester Street, allowing access to Woodbank Primary School, Holme Avenue, from number 56 to Garside Hey, and Trimingham Drive, between Brandlesholme Road and Salthouse Close, will be given a facelift too.

The changes will see £10m invested in the borough's roads between now and 2026, which comes on top of £20m of funding since 2017.

Elton Labour councillors Charlotte Morris and Martin Hayes have welcomed the latest round.

Cllr Morris said: “The state of our roads is something that residents raise with us regularly and thanks to Bury Labour’s massive investment, several roads in our area will now be completely resurfaced.

“I’m particularly pleased to see that the roads on the list for resurfacing match up with the list of roads I’ve put forward for improvements to the council.

“It goes to show that when you work hard as a councillor and represent your residents, you can get things done.

“But let’s not forget that we wouldn’t be able to improve these roads if it weren’t for the massive investment Labour in Bury is making in our roads.

“After 12 years of brutal government cuts to the council's budget, we have very little left to look after our 660km of roads and 1,200km of footpaths.

“Bury needs about £12m per year just to maintain our roads in their current state - let alone make improvements - yet we now only get about £2m each year from the government for highway maintenance.

“I’ll leave residents to do the maths on that one!”
