Ambitious plans to tackle "nightmare" traffic and parking conditions on a main road have been put forward.

Labour Councillors Kevin Peel, Ciaron Boles and Sandra Walmsley have launched a consultation to make Walmersley Road a "red route". 

A "red route" is a stretch of road painted with double red lines which impose a strict no-stopping rule.

The proposed red route would start from the junction of A56 Peel Way to the St Mark’s signalised junction.

The plans aim to tackle the ongoing issues of illegal parking and congestion on the street as well as setting out plans to improve traffic flow and emergency vehicle access.

The new rules would be enforced by traffic cameras and anyone found to be in breach of them will be handed a fine.

Cllr Peel says making the road a red route would tackle issues that have been ongoing for years.

The Moorside representative says customers and delivery drivers of takeaways on the road are parking on double yellow lines, causing problems for motorists. 

He said: “Its completely obstructing the highway and it been driving not just residents nuts over the years but also emergency services.

“I’ve had people from Bury ambulance get in touch and say ‘there are times when we just can’t get an ambulance past’.”

Cllr Peel says reaction to the proposals have been overwhelmingly positive and a petition for the changes was signed by more than 400 residents.

He added: “We won’t just be putting some paint down, they’ll be cameras there and anyone who is caught parking will be fined so it will deal with the problem pretty quickly.

“There are double yellows there, people shouldn’t be parking there, and I think people get very angry when they see people flouting the rules.

“The main issue is that it really obstructs traffic, it’s a real nightmare.”

If consultations are successful it is expected that the red route will be in place on Walmersley Road by the summer.
