A petition has been launched to improve the safety on a road in Redvales which has been plagued by dangerous drivers.

Julie Ann Green, who lives on Alfred’s Close, has gathered more than 80 signatures after residents complained of noisy and speeding cars on their street.

Residents say cars can be heard driving down the road late into the night, with drivers avoiding pre-existing traffic calming measures.

She says that drivers are also creating danger by driving over, instead of around, the nearby roundabout on Cornwall Drive.

Julie said: “They don’t stop at the roundabout, they just go straight on.”

Neighbours say they are also worried about letting children play outside their homes as cars have even crashed into walls outside properties in the past.

Julie said: “[The community] are worried because they’ve got young children and they’re frightened of letting them go and play out.

“All the parents have to stand at the gate and just watch them.”

Residents on the street have also voiced concerns about noise, saying that speeding cars are keeping people awake long into the night.

Julie added: “They’re disturbing people up until two o’clock in the morning.

“I’m hoping to make the road safer and put in place calming measures, especially when people are trying to sleep and they’ve got to go shift working, they don’t want to hear that at all times of the night.”

She says that the situation has worsened over the years and that further traffic calming measures should be put in place before anyone is hurt on the road.

Julie said “There are elderly people who have trouble crossing and people with disabilities.”

“Things seem to be worsening instead of improving, there are bumps in the road but instead of going over them [drivers] are going round them.”

In response to the problem, a council spokesperson said: “There are already traffic calming measures on Alfred Street in the form of speed cushions on Alfred Street and mini roundabouts at the junction of Albert Street with Cornwall Drive and Gigg Lane.

“The area is also already within an existing 20mph speed limit zone.

“Additional measures are being looked at for the area as part of Transport for Greater Manchester's Active Travel initiative for the Parkhills area in the form of alterations to junctions in the locality and measures to improve road safety for vulnerable road users on Alfred Street such as cyclists and pedestrians.”

Greater Manchester Police has been contacted for comment about the driving problems.
