A primary school in Radcliffe has won an award for promoting green-fingered activities in the classroom.

Wesley Methodist Primary School on Forth Road has won a Green Tree School Gold Award from the Woodland Trust for integrating outdoor learning into the curriculum.

Schools that emphasise environmental issues and take part in eco-friendly activities are recognised by the woodland conservation charity.

In addition to getting involved in several Woodland Trust activities, staff and students at the school, part of Epworth Education Trust, have planted new trees in the school grounds and introduced strategies to lower carbon emissions in its "forest school".

Headteacher Rhys Jones said: "We have successfully completed a range of outdoor activities that have kept us extremely busy and have also aided in the learning and growth of the children.

“Everyone has had a wonderful time working towards the award.

“The pupils have learned a great deal about taking care of the environment, wildlife, and nature.

"At Wesley, we encourage taking an active role in being responsible for our environment."

The Woodland Trust, the largest woodland conservation organisation in the UK, is committed to saving and restoring historic woodland for future generations to enjoy.

And it works to establish new woodland with the aid of communities and schools.

Since its 2008 start, more than 12,000 schools have joined its Green Tree Schools programme.

Woodland Trust schools and communities engagement manager, Karen Letten, said: "The scheme promotes a range of opportunities, each designed to stimulate a child's imagination and sustain their interest in woods and trees"

"The school's achievements are recognised through an awards scheme in which they receive points for participating in activities.

“As they reach project milestones, they receive bronze and silver certificates, followed by an attractive wooden plaque recognising their achievement of the environmental accolade of a gold award.

Epworth Education Trust CEO Julie-Ann Hewitt added: “Congratulations to everyone at Wesley Methodist Primary who have been instrumental in the school gaining this award.

“As a trust, we believe that learning does not just take place in the classroom and it is wonderful to see the curriculum spreading into the great outdoors.”
